TROCHANTRIC BURSISTIS

Physiotherapy

Trochanteric Bursitis is inflammation (swelling ) of the bursa (fluid-filled sac near a joint). Which is located outside the lateral point of the hip known as the greater trochanter. When this bursa becomes irritated or inflamed, it causes pain in the hip. Causes of trochanteric bursitis include:

  • Injury to point of the hip

  • Activities that cause overuse or injury to joint areas

  • Poor posture

  • Previous Surgery

  • Stress on Soft Tissues

  • Hip Bone Spurs (Calcium Deposits)

Symptoms Include:

  • Pain on outer hip & thigh or buttock

  • Pain when you press outer hips

  • Pain walking up the stairs

  • Pain when lying on side

  • Pain gets worse when getting up from a sitting position

The Bursa is a sac filled with lubricating fluid, located between tissues such as bones, muscles, tendons, & skin, that decreases rubbing, friction, and irritation. Located at the outside of each hip, sitting on top of the greater trochanter and underneath the gluteal muscles and tendons.

A healthy Trochanteric Bursa allows for the muscles to glide along their bony attachments as you move and walk. When the outside hip bursae get inflamed (swollen), you have trochanteric bursitis.
